Professional Doctorate

Universities of applied sciences in Finland propose that the country should follow European developments and enable professional doctoral degrees. The Professional Doctorate would be equivalent in level to the university doctoral degree, but implemented in an applied manner, in close collaboration with companies and working life. The aim is to strengthen Finland’s competitiveness.

The preparation of the Professional Doctorate is progressing through collaboration among universities of applied sciences. A total of 12 universities of applied sciences are participating in a working group that is drafting a concrete proposal outlining the structure of the degree and a potential pilot phase to test the model.
